Girls Track

floridaFlorida @ Panther Invitational

The Girls Track and Field team traveled to Ridgeview High School last week Thursday to compete against eight other schools in the Panther Invitational. It was the first meet of the year. With just three practices under their belts, the girls did not disappoint.

Oceana Brown and Zoe Wilson stole the show with their performances in the 100 meter sprint and 1600 meter run, respectively.

Brown captured first place in the 100 meter sprint clocking in at 13.11 seconds. Not only she was the fastest in the field of 30, but also the youngest. Oceana is already making a name for herself and is on track for a bright future!

Wilson, a first-year member of the team and a multi-sport athlete, who is completely blind, used a cane to run the mile in seven minutes and 33 seconds. This is nothing short of miraculous as she ran three-fourth of a lap without her cane after dropping it near the halfway point of the race. Poor track conditions played a factor but luckily, the cane was returned to her by a spectator and she was able to finish the race with flying colors. She may have placed 11th out of 17 but she captured 1st place in the hearts of the many athletes and fans who were cheering her on. Definitely a goosebump moment and one I'll never forget. Wilson is the epitome of Courage and Never Quit!!

Assistant coach Von Bursdall and I liked what we saw from our speedsters in the sprinting relay events as we placed 3rd and 5th in the 4x100m and 4x400m, respectively. With practice and hard work, and Olivia Brown back in the mix, it will only get better from here on out.

Rookies Pinen Deshi (100, 4x100, 4x400), Katrina Kalis (1600), Nikayla Merced (400), and Samantha Suarez (Shot Put, Discus) had the opportunity to get their feet wet. The sky's the limit for these girls.
