Western Pennsylvania wins 2nd straight ESDAA Division 1 soccer championship

The Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) Division 1 tournament held at Marie Philip School last weekend turned into a nail-biting event as five games over the two-day span ended in a tie and were decided in a shootout.

Despite the stomach churning weekend, Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf successfully defended their Division 1 championship to win it all once again for 2017. On Friday, Western Pennsylvania won both pool matches to earn a number one seed in the semifinals. Their first match against New York was not decided until late in the game where they pulled a 1-0 victory. The second game with Marie Philip ended in a scoreless tie and Western Pennsylvania took the “W” with a 2-1 shootout win.

The second day of competition started out with both semifinal games needing a shootout to determine the game winners. Western Pennsylvania and Lexington had a scoreless tie which was decided by a 3-1 shootout in favor of Western Pennsylvania. The other semifinal game had American and Marie Philip in a 1-1 tie. American won the shootout in this game, 3-2. After scoring just one goal in regulation over the weekend, Western Pennsylvania were able to get two against American to claim their second straight ESDAA Division 1 championship.
