Victim of Moreno Valley shooting revered as promising student-athlete at School for Deaf

riversideCalifornia School for the Deaf students and faculty are mourning the loss of DeSean Welch, a varsity basketball player who was shot to death Friday, Sept. 16, near Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley.

Welch's killer or killers remained at large Tuesday, said Riverside County Sheriff's Department spokesman Michael Vasquez.

Deaf teen killed by gunman after he and friends explain in a text, 'We can't hear you'

riversideThe family of a deaf teen says he was killed Friday night when a gunman approached him and his deaf friends in Moreno Valley, asked them questions and began shooting as they tried to explain that they couldn’t hear him.

Najai Welch said her brother, DeSean Welch, and his friends were watching a football game at Rancho Verde High School, where the unidentified gunman approached them and began asking questions.

Victorville Family Seeking Justice After Son Mistakenly Shot, Killed Near High School

riversideDeputies are searching for the person who shot and killed a deaf teenager on Friday near a Moreno Valley high school.

Family members are calling the 18-year-old's death "a senseless act of murder" and a case of mistaken identity.

HS Cross Country Roundup - September 13

texasTexas sent seven runners, four boys, and three girls to the St. Andrew's Invitational XC Meet on Saturday, September 10. Each TSD runner improved their times from the season's first event, the TSD Ranger Time Trial on hosted on Wednesday, August 31.

Freshman Ashley Harlicker established a new TSD XC 2-mile record with a time of 15:24. The former record stood for three years.

Freshman Jordan Leach set a new 5K record with a time of 35:08 at the Ranger Time Trial on August 31.

Sophomore Joe Cardenas broke a 4-year old record on September 10, with a time of 19:22. Cardenas also ran in the New Braunfels XC Invitational on September 3 and established a new record for the boys 2-mile run with a time of 11:20.

texasTexas High School Cross-Country started its competitive running season with an intra-squad time trial on the Texas School for the Deaf campus road and track. Runners confronted and overcame the 95+ degree temperatures, a hilly campus road, and a lot of sweat, to achieve the following benchmark times for either the 2-mile or 5K (3.1 mile) distances, see below.

Runners had a choice between the 2 mile run or the 5K. The usual competitive distance for boys is 5K and for girls is 2 miles, in Texas, and for girls, the 2 mile or 5K distances. (Contributed by Head Coach Nick Bannon)
