Hearing impairment doesn’t hinder UT outfielder

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The empty stadium was silent, only the quiet buzz of the lights filling the night air. Standing on the dugout steps, Cailin Hannon soaked in the scene. An hour earlier, the ballpark had been buzzing with noise. The ping of the bat, the pop of the glove, the cheers from the dugout.

Once only muffled sounds to Hannon, the full richness of a softball game at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium has become more magnified since she arrived at Tennessee. Hannon is 40 percent deaf in both ears. The sophomore outfielder navigated most of her life by having people just talk louder or asking them to repeat themselves.
