Milwaukee man excels at curling despite being deaf: ‘Gives me the confidence to communicate’

CEDARBURG -- Once an athlete, always an athlete seems to be the motto for John Knetzger of Milwaukee, and while his sports may have changed, his spirit remains, and he hopes his story inspires others to give curling a try.

"People love watching the game. They love watching the people sweep. They love the yelling of it," said Scott Kania.

UFC veteran Matt Hamill returns to the cage for Unified MMA

Matt Hamill is making a comeback and he’ll be doing so with some gold on the line.

The UFC veteran will take on Teddy Ash for the Unified MMA light heavyweight title in the main event of Unified 33 on May 11 in Enoch, Alberta, Canada, the promotion announced Thursday.

Dummy Hoy

Dummy HoyIn the midst of all the talk about Sano and his weight, I got to thinking about the judgments that people make about other people – baseball players and their size – think Altuve or Randy Johnson, their weight, their various physical attributes – like my essay on Pete Gray who over came the fact that he lacked an arm or Jim Abbot and others judged to be handicapped. Perhaps it is the fact that my daughter is deaf that made me think about Dummy Hoy.

Callington's Charlotte is the VIP for England Deaf Rugby international match

CALLINGTON’S Charlotte Tait braved the chilly winds of North Yorkshire last month to act as the VIP match day mascot for an international rugby match.

On a very chilly Saturday in February, Charlotte Tait stood proudly singing the national anthem in Ilkley, North Yorkshire, as the mascot for England Deaf Rugby, who won convincingly against neighbours Wales Deaf Rugby.

Eastside Y exercisers who are deaf have a trainer who knows their language

In her head, Janna Luksha was studying for a career using computers.

Her heart wasn’t convinced that's what she wanted to do.

“I’ve always been interested in the fitness area,” Luksha said in American Sign Language through interpreter Tom Ohl. “I wanted to do something related. They don’t have any deaf personal trainers when I came to this area, or any deaf teachers of fitness. I wanted to be the first. I believed I could do it.”
