Deaf Olympian Dean Barton-Smith takes on coaching role with Eastern Football League club Ferntree Gully

Ferntree Gully FCDEAN Barton-Smith is no stranger to breaking down barriers.

Twenty-five years since Barton-Smith, 49, became the first deaf Australian to compete at an Olympic Games, he is now inspiring the next generation of athletes to reach the pinnacle of their sport.

The Kilsyth South resident wore a T-shirt at the 1992 Barcelona Games with the words: “Who says deaf people can’t do anything.” On the back it said: “Think again.”
