John Knetzger began his volleyball career at Shorewood High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin U.S.A. and did not learn of the Deaflympics until after graduation from college.

He participated in local leagues and tournaments with hearing teammates and in regional and national volleyball tournaments for the deaf as a member of several deaf sports clubs, winning several championships and all-star awards.

John competed in the 1993, 1997, and 2001 Summer Deaflympics as a middle blocker for the USA men’s volleyball team.  The 1993 team finished second and is still the only team in American men’s volleyball history that medaled.  After his Deaflympic athletic career concluded, he served the USA Deaf Sports Federation as its vice president of member services and continues to play beach volleyball in Milwaukee and Chicago under EVPTour and AVPNext.

ICSD added beach volleyball to the 2005 Summer Deaflympics program and appointed John as an assistant volleyball technical director to supervise the event.  He also supervised volleyball at the 2008 world championship and the 2009 Summer Deaflympics.  After ICSD reclassified the volleyball and assistant volleyball positions into two independent positions, John was re-appointed as technical director of beach volleyball and his next assignment will be the 2010 world championship at Tel Aviv, Israel.

John graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering and works for Rockwell Automation as a software developer.  He resides in Milwaukee and can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
